DJ Choc, one of the founding fathers of kwaito and house music in South Africa, has died at the age of 51.
Born Mbuyiselo Ngwenya, he helped shape the country’s sound in the early days of kwaito and house, and played a key role as a mentor and father figure to many young musicians.
His daughter, amapiano star Lady Du, real name Duduzile Ngwenya, broke the news in a deeply emotional Instagram post on behalf of the family. “It is with deep sorrow and immense respect that we confirm the passing of South African music legend DJ Choc Ngwenya.”
