- Social media personality Musa Khawula stays in jail after being arrested for making harmful posts about a businessman online.
- Khawula, who faces other serious charges including murder, will apply for bail on 21 January.
Controversial social media blogger Musa Khawula is spending a week in police cells after the Randburg Regional Court moved his bail hearing to 21 January.
The 33-year-old was in court on Tuesday for making damaging statements on social media and hate speech.
Khawula posted about businesswoman Zee Nxumalo on his social media accounts on 10 and 12 October 2024. The posts were allegedly meant to hurt Nxumalo’s reputation.
He later removed the posts from his X (formerly Twitter) account.
NPA Gauteng spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said prosecutors fought against bail because Khawula has a pending murder case in the Free State.
“Police are still to verify his profile and physical address to enable the compilation of a comprehensive statement for bail application purposes,” she said.
“Subsequently, Khawula has been remanded in police custody without bail until 21 January, when a formal bail application will be heard.”
He also needs to answer for dangerous driving in a separate case.
Khawula, who calls himself the “Pope of pop culture”, is famous for posting shocking information about celebrities and businessmen on social media.
Despite many threats of legal action over the years, he has kept posting about people’s private lives.
