Nkule Matai went to fetch her son from school but the boy did not show up at the gate.

Nkule, thinking five-year-old Kwanele was missing, collapsed and died at the school primary school gate.

But Kwanele was not missing, he walked home with a neighbour without his mother’s knowledge.

The incident that shocked many happened in Caleb Motshabi, Mangaung on Thursday afternoon.

Family friend Itumeleng Mokhele said 28-year -old Nkule had problems with her family and she regarded her two kids as her only family.

She told Scrolla.Africa: “Nkule had two kids aged five and seven and she loved them dearly. She couldn’t imagine her life without them.

A resident, Pule Matheba, 33, said she saw Nkule screaming at the school gate saying her child had been missing.

“I was worried and felt sad for her. She collapsed and the ambulance was called. But she was certified dead at the scene,” said Pule.

He said it was even sad that the worry that her child was missing was not even true.

“I wish someone had seen the child walking home and informed her. That could have saved her life,” said Pule.
