Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium is getting a major makeover worth R236-million after years of complaints about its poor condition.
Mayor Cyril Xaba announced during his 100 days in office report that the council approved the money to fix up the 15-year-old stadium.
“We want to assure all our stakeholders that the venue is structurally sound, and it will continue to host major events while the repairs are ongoing. This has been approved and certified by engineers,” said Xaba.
The stadium lost its appeal to tourists after popular attractions like its zip line and sky car fell into disrepair.
The renovations will bring new life to the stadium with improved features including new arch lighting that changes colour, an upgraded sky car that’s wheelchair friendly, and a bigger viewing platform with a glass floor for an “air walk” experience.
Other new additions include a visitor reception area, an improved big swing, and a zip line ending at People’s Park. The stadium will also get a compression ring walk offering sea views and bungee jumping.
Xaba explained that after many years of use, a building this size needs major work to stay attractive and meet safety rules.
The stadium remains active despite its problems. This year it hosted the Nedbank Cup Quarter Final and the MTN8 Cup final, which drew over 60,000 fans.
In 2023, the Metro spent R60-million in repairs and maintenance for the ageing stadium.
