The addition of 75 athletes across nine sports has strengthened South Africa’s team for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.
The provisional national team now has 114 athletes in 15 sports.
This increase follows the initial announcement of 39 athletes by the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee last month.
Seven new athletes joined athletics, making the squad 24-strong. Notable additions include marathon runner Elroy Gelant and discus thrower Francois Prinsloo.
The triathlon team features former Olympic bronze medallist Henri Schoeman.
The cycling team has added seven athletes, including experienced road specialist Ashleigh Moolman Pasio and cross-country riders Alan Hatherley and Candice Lill.
John Smith, a former gold medallist in the men’s fours, was added to the rowing team and will compete alongside Christopher Baxter.
The provisional women’s rugby sevens squad includes 16 athletes, while 32 players have been confirmed for the men’s and women’s hockey teams.
The national team also includes archery, badminton, fencing, and gymnastics athletes. A final group of athletes will be announced later this month, with additional competitors expected in sports like golf, judo, rowing, and skateboarding.
More athletes could still qualify in other disciplines, such as men’s rugby sevens, breakdancing, and beach volleyball.
