It is not just ordinary South Africans that need a side-hustle; celebrities like Thapelo Molomo and Noxolo Mathula have them too.
Popular actress Noxolo Mathula, who plays Sergeant Lily Madongwe on the weekday SABC1 soapie Uzalo, has established a booming hotdog business operating at taxi ranks in Durban.
Idols Season18 winner Thapelo Molomo has also come out with his eggs and atchar side-hustle, which he operates from the boot of his car.
Molomo’s move has had some people thinking he may have blown away the millions he won from the competition but the singer from North West dismissed those thoughts.
“No, I am not broke at all. This business is another form of income for me. I still have my job at the South African Police Services as a psychologist.
“I decided to come up with this type of business because I want to show my colleagues in the music industry that it’s worth trying other means of income while you are still relevant. So far it’s going well and I couldn’t be happier,” Molomo told Scrolla.Africa.
On his music career prospects, Molomo said he will drop an EP next month.
“There has been a behind-the-scenes project I have been cooking at Kalawa Jazmee Records. My fans must expect magic,” he said.
Down in Durban Mathula can be seen with her crew busy selling hotdogs. Passers-by at the busy rank were initially surprised when they saw her there after seeing her on TV the previous night.
“I don’t focus on people who may whisper behind my back when I am pushing my business. People pretend as if they don’t realise we are living in tough times these days. And besides, our entertainment industry is fickle and unpredictable.
“Why wait for rainy days before you think of coming up with a side hustle? And besides,” she said, “some of us have extended families so relying on one salary is not sufficient.”
