Mob attacks suspected phone thief in Cape Town

A video showing people beating a man accused of stealing a phone in Cape Town’s city centre has gone viral.

In the video, the man claims he’s innocent while people ask why he was running.

Nolonwabo Mdiya, 45, who has been robbed in town before, supports the beating.

“You need to be very careful when walking in town because they are everywhere,” said Mdiya.

“They could’ve searched the bag because they use them to hide the stolen goods they rob from people.”

However, some residents think the violence was wrong.

“Why didn’t they call the cops? Anyone who breaks the law needs to be handed to SAPS; you don’t take the law into your hands,” said one person who asked to stay anonymous.

Lulama Mgoqi, 40, believes the beating will stop crime.

“These guys continue robbing people in town because they know that nothing will happen to them. Even if they get arrested, they will come back and continue stealing people’s belongings.

“I am happy that they assaulted him; maybe it will send a message to other criminals stealing people’s phones to stop,” said Mgoqi.
