The results of last week’s Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) elections have led student political organisations to form coalitions to run their nine-member student representative councils (SRCs) on two of its six campuses.
The EFF Student Command (EFFSC) won outright control of three campuses – Pretoria, Polokwane and Ga-Rankuwa.
The ANC-aligned South African Students Congress (Sasco) won the Mbombela campus.
At the Malahleni campus, the EFFSC won three seats but failed to form alliances with other groups, losing out on key leadership positions.
ActionSA, with only one seat, secured the SRC president’s position. The IFP-aligned South African Democratic Student Movement (Sadesmo), which also won one seat, was given the deputy president’s position, while the EFFSC received the roles of deputy secretary, treasurer, and Office of Universal Access.
In Soshanguve, despite winning a reasonable number of seats, Sasco was left out of coalition talks by the EFFSC, the MK Youth League, and the Students Christian Organisation.
The MK Youth League, with three seats, took the positions of president, sports, arts and culture, and the Education and Transformation Office. Sasco received the roles of deputy president, deputy secretary, and Office of Universal Access.
