- A 3.1 magnitude earthquake hit Johannesburg on Tuesday night with its centre in Randfontein
- Emergency services stayed alert all night but no one was hurt or reported any damage
Johannesburg was shaking on Tuesday night when a small earthquake hit at 8.30pm.
The Council for Geoscience measured the quake at 3.1 on its scale. The tremor started in Randfontein but people felt it across Johannesburg.
Emergency teams stayed alert around the city all night, and no one was hurt.
Last month the Randfontein area was also struck by a near tornado and hailstorm which also left a trail of destruction.
“No injuries or damages were reported through our Emergency Services Call Centre,” said Joburg Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi. “Residents are urged to be safe.”
While the Council for Geoscience hasn’t given its final report, the early details come from South Africa’s national earthquake tracking system.
Emergency teams stayed on high alert through the night in case of aftershocks.
