  • The accused used private maths lessons to groom boys aged 12 to 16 over two years, police say.

A young medical student is accused of turning maths tutoring sessions as trap to rape six boys aged 12 to 16.

The Randburg Magistrate’s Court formally charged the 25-year-old with rape, sexual assault of a minor and grooming.

It is alleged that he gained the trust of their parents by presenting himself as a brilliant, responsible student who loved helping children excel in mathematics.

He then used the one-on-one sessions to abuse the minors in private settings for over a period of two years.

One of the victims told a teacher about the abuse. Soon after, more victims came forward and a police investigation into the allegations began.

According to the State, the suspect gained the trust of families by presenting himself as a high achieving, responsible medical student with a ‘’passion for helping young learners excel in mathematic’’.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said the case shows a “calculated abuse of power” by someone who exploited the trust of families for his own sexual gratification.

He remains behind bars after bail was denied because of the serious nature of the charges and the risk to the public safety. The victims and their families are currently receiving psychosocial support.
