Mbalula warns ANC faces crisis that could destroy it

ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has warned that the party is in deep trouble – and could collapse if it doesn’t change fast.

Speaking at a branch meeting in Liliesleaf, Rivonia, on Sunday, Mbalula said the ANC is losing support because of corruption, internal divisions and poor leadership.

“We are facing an existential crisis,” he said. “The fundamental question is: what do we do about it?”

He told ordinary members to take charge and help rebuild the party from the ground up. Without that, he warned, opposition parties would take advantage of the ANC’s weakness and “sink it further.”

Mbalula said the ANC’s biggest problem is focusing on power struggles instead of fixing itself. He told members to stop worrying about what other parties are doing and to focus on building their own strong local leaders.

“Stop arguing about some MaGogo who is announced – let’s have our own MaGogo,” he said, referring to rival mayoral battles in Johannesburg. “That mayor position is big.”

His comments come as the ANC battles to hold on to control in key cities like Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni, where coalition politics have left the party vulnerable.
