Master KG’s “Jerusalema”, the global soundtrack of 2020, has chalked up yet another major victory: it’s the first South African song ever to hit 300 million streams on Spotify.
No matter how many times the track continues to get played on radio, the force with which it hit the world in December 2019 is still unforgettable. Nomcebo Zikode’s voice lifted many of us during the dark days of the First Wave of the pandemic.
The track was released under the Open Productions recording company label, and even though the 25-year-old left them this year, “Jerusalema” has continued to break record after record.
Earlier this month, while touring in Europe, Master KG parted ways with Open Mic Productions to sign under his own record label, Wanitwa Mos Entertainment, which publishes music under Warner’s Elektra France.
While “Jerusalema” has gathered more listens on Spotify than any song in the country’s history – and in less than two years – its music video has even more hits on Youtube. The eclectic and uplifting video has been viewed over 440 million times.
