Mandla George has been appointed acting city manager for the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) after the suspension of city manager Noxolo Nqwazi, who is on trial for corruption.

Eastern Cape MEC Zolile Williams chose George and told him to fix service delivery issues and work without interference from councillors.

“George has been given clear terms of reference to ensure no service delivery complaints,” Williams said.

“I’ve given him clear instructions to work in line with legislation and that councillors shouldn’t interfere with his work as city manager.”

George, who was seconded from his position at the Competition Commission, was previously NMBM’s chief operations officer and acting city manager.

NMBM mayor Gary van Niekerk welcomed George, praising his strong work ethic and focus on service delivery.

“What excites me more is that he is obsessed with high-quality performance and accountability from a team he works with,” said Van Niekerk.

George said he is committed to improving performance and fixing community problems.

“During my time here, I want to improve performance and accountability on low performance, and a management style that is connected to the people and the service delivery challenges they face daily.

“Over time, service delivery has been shifted down in the list of priorities; we cannot allow that,” said George.
