Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy now faces a total of six counts of rape relating to four victims, after being charged with two additional counts this week.
The 27-year-old was arrested in August when he was charged with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. Mendy, who remains in custody after being refused bail on several occasions, has yet to enter a plea.
“Cheshire Constabulary and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) would like to remind everyone that criminal proceedings against Mendy are in progress and that he has a right to a fair trial,” a statement from the local police read.
The Frenchman allegedly committed the crimes between October 2020 and August of this year.
The victims are four different women with one being under the age of 18.
Mendy is due to appear in the Stockport Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday in his second court appearance since his arrest.
The footballer, who signed for Manchester City in 2017 for £52 million (over R1 billion), was suspended by the club pending an ongoing investigation.
Mendy is set to remain in police custody into the new year as his trial is scheduled to begin towards the end of January 2022.
