Man held for illegal booze worth R24-million

A 20-year-old Chinese national was arrested for dealing in counterfeit and illegal alcohol on Wednesday.

The estimated street value of the liquor found and confiscated was R24-million.

Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said the provincial counterfeit illicit and contraband goods task team launched an operation in the Kleivlei area on Wednesday.

“The members searched a liquor outlet on the corner of Plein and Ryneveld streets, Eerste River, where they confiscated liquor that did not meet the requirements for sale purposes,” said Twigg.

“The man is due to make a court appearance in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court once he has been charged.”

Commenting on the man’s arrest, resident Nolitha Kamane said the government needs to introduce more drastic sentences for foreigners who break the law.

“Foreign nationals breaking the law in our country respect the laws of their own countries, and they will never do what they are doing in South Africa,” said Kamane.

“He must name the people he was going to deliver the liquor to because I believe he’s not working alone.”
