A Vietnamese man has been sentenced to five years in prison for flouting Covid-19 regulations when he was infected with the virus.
Le Van Tri was found guilty of “transmitting dangerous infectious diseases” to eight people, one of whom died of the virus.
In July, the 28-year-old travelled by motorbike from Ho Chi Minh City to his home province of Ca Mau in the south of the country.
In recent months, Vietnam has seen a rapid rise in cases after initially managing to largely fend off the virus.
Many of the country’s cases have originated in Ho Chi Minh City, which has a population of nine million.
After he arrived in Ca Mau, Tri was found to have lied about his travels on a health declaration form. He also was found to have flouted isolation rules.
Tri later tested positive for Covid-19, and virus tracking found that he had passed it on to members of his own family and staff at a welfare centre he visited.
On top of the five-year sentence, he was fined the equivalent of R12,500.
