The family of late Big Nuz member Mandla “Mampintsha” Maphumulo are holding a collective breath for their mother, Zamanguni Gumede, who is said to be critically ill.

According to her daughter Pinky Gumede, Zamanguni Gumede was rushed to a Durban hospital a day after burying her son. Mampintsha was laid to rest on 30 December.

Speaking to Scrolla.Africa on Sunday, a distraught Gumede said, “My mother is fighting for her life and is on a touchline of death. The last time we checked up on her on Friday she was speaking in tongues. She couldn’t even recognise us, her own children, and kept asking where Mampintsha was.

“Things are really scary and I’m calling for everyone to keep us in their prayers as we are going through this traumatic phase.

“Way before Mampintsha’s death my mother has been ill for some time. What made her health deteriorate is that she was emotionally battered because she couldn’t reach him when she wanted to help him sort out a traditional ceremony.”

Gumede alleged that they can’t get hold of Mampintsha’s wife Bongekile Simelane, known as Babes Wodumo in music circles, to make her aware of her mother-in-law’s current health status.

“Before our brother passed on he told my mother that he covered her in his funeral policy. The problem is it’s difficult to get through to Babes because she’s a drama queen. We fear the worst should she die because we are struggling to make ends meet,” said Gumede.

Babes Wodumo couldn’t be reached for comment but her sister Nondumiso Simelane pleaded ignorance about Mampintsha’s mother being critically sick.

“It’s the first time I hear about that,” she said. “I’ll speak to Babes when she’s back. But why don’t they call us because they’ve got our numbers? Even Mampintsha’s number is on now.”
