EFF leader Julius Malema has launched a scathing attack on Minister of Police Bheki Cele, saying he is incompetent and losing the war on crime.

Speaking at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday during the party’s election manifesto, Malema said the only thing Cele knows how to do is “masquerade as a film star”.

“We will never win a war against crime if Bheki Cele is still the minister of police in the country,’’ said Malema, adding that Cele must go. He also accused cops of being fat and unfit, and said they contribute to the rampant crime in the country.

He said if voted into power, his organisation would fire cops who are fat.

“We do not want police who look like our deputy president Floyd Shivambu and our general secretary Marshal Dlamini; our police must be fit so they are able to fight criminals.’’

Malema said police must stay in shape. “If you lose shape, we would not hesitate to fire you,” he said.

He called on South Africans to reclaim the streets from criminals. “Criminals are ruling the country because our police and the army are dysfunctional,’’ he said. “Also, there are many illegal firearms in the hands of criminals which contribute to the murders in the country”.

Malema said his party would motivate the police by giving them incentives to perform; and said the army needed to be deployed to the Western Cape to overcome the drug lords there.
