After almost two years without a programme manager at Ukhozi FM, the SABC is expected to fill the gap with the appointment of an experienced broadcaster.

The IsiZulu radio station, one of the biggest stations in Africa, parted ways with Zandile Tembe in September 2021 after she was charged with misconduct.

Former East Coast Radio, Radio 2000, 702 and Rise FM presenter Makhosi Khoza appears to be the frontrunner to land the job.

Khoza, who boasts over 25 years’ experience behind the mic, resigned from Gagasi FM as content specialist last year.

Those close to him view the resignation as a sign he was getting ready for the prestigious Ukhozi FM job. The station has 7.5-million listeners.

“Makhosi stands a good chance to get the job given his extensive experience in radio. There were other candidates from the corporate sector and radio [stations] who applied but were overlooked.

“The broadcast corporation believes his leadership style will shepherd Ukhozi FM to dizzy heights,” a source close to Khoza told Scrolla.Africa.

In the meantime, veteran jazz show presenter Mandla Mdletshe has been holding the fort, with reports suggesting he is not looking for another job.

Approached for comment, Khoza gave a polite and candid reply.

“Even if I had been informed by the SABC that I passed the interview, I am not in a position to confirm or deny anything,” he said.

SABC’s spokesperson Gugu Ntuli said: “As a matter of principle, the SABC has never discussed the details of its recruitment processes in the public space.”

Khoza’s appointment, if confirmed, would come at a crucial time as in three months Ukhozi FM is set to reshuffle their DJ line-up.
