Makhadzi claims she has not been paid a single cent for the three albums she recorded with Open Mic – but the record company is disputing this.
On Thursday morning, Twitter users that tweet for promotion – sometimes referred to as “influencers” – released bank statements indicating that Makhadzi was paid around R8 million.
A letter from lawyers addressed to the singer giving her a deadline to apologise was also circulated.
When Makhadzi made her allegations she said she had signed a three-year contract with Open Mic. She said she dropped four albums in the three years for which she was never paid
“Some of my albums reached platinum and some gold and I had a lot of hit songs that reached platinum and gold but I continued to work without complaining,” she said.
This had social media on overdrive and lawyers, including EFFpolitician Godrich Gardee, offered Makhadzi free legal help to extract her from her working relationship with the music stable and recoup some of the money.
After this revelation by Makhadzi, other musicians signed to Open Mic, like singer Paige, also came out, claiming non-payment by Open Mic.
Responding to the allegations from Open Mic that she had been paid millions, Makhadzi was not fazed. The “Ghanama” hit-maker told Scrolla.Africa that she still wants her money.
“I don’t care about influencers being paid to tarnish my name. I want my money and a copy of the contract I was supposed to have signed,” she said.
Makhadzi, who recently won a Metro FM music award, said she has no bad feelings towards Open Mic. “They must give me my money and we’ll be all good. I don’t hate them,” she said.
