The death toll from the Lusikisiki massacre has risen to 18.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa confirmed on Sunday that one of the people admitted to the hospital in critical condition died from their injuries.
The latest victim was a male. His age is currently unknown.
“There are no other new developments,” Mawisa said.
Thirteen people, including 12 women and one man, were killed in one house, while four people were murdered in a second house during the attack. The latest victim was one of three people who were hospitalized after the shooting.
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu said the victims were family members and neighbours. They were preparing for the “ukukhululwa kwezila”, a traditional ceremony which marks the end of mourning for a mother and daughter murdered last year.
The families had gathered at one house to prepare for the ceremony, which was to take place in another village the next day.
Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane condemned the violence.
“We stand in solidarity with the families and communities affected. The brutal and senseless killing of innocent people is a heinous act that has no place in our society,” he said.
Eastern Cape Transport and Community Safety MEC Xolile Nqatha urged the public to come forward with any information.
“We urge communities to report criminal acts to Crime Stop at 08600 10111,” he said.
