Lucas Moripe dies at 71

  • Lucas Moripe played for Orlando Pirates and Pretoria Callies in the 1970s before injuries cut his career short.
  • The Pretoria stadium named after him is now home to two PSL teams.

South Africa’s famous dazzling football dribbler of the 70s, the great Lucas “Masterpieces” Moripe has died at his home in Atteridgeville.

Moripe, known for his time with Orlando Pirates in the 1970s, had been stuck in a wheelchair after suffering a mild stroke.

This football legend made his mark at both Pretoria Callies and Pirates before knee injuries ended his career in the late 1980s.

His impact on the game lives on through the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium in Pretoria, which now hosts matches for Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United. A street in Atteridgeville is also named after him.

The 30,000-seat stadium, formerly known as Atteridgeville Super Stadium, stands as a tribute to his contribution to South African football.

The family has not yet announced funeral plans for the man who helped shape what many call the golden years of South African football.
