Liverpool hit the headlines – for all the wrong reasons

On Thursday night the English Premier League champions lost 1-0 to Burnley – ending an unbeaten run of 68 league matches at Anfield. The last time they lost at home was in 2017 and what is more, that defeat has extended their winless run to five matches in a row.

But that’s not all!

The Reds have now failed to score in four Premier League matches in a row and the last time that happened was 21 years ago.

To add salt to the wounds, the penalty that gave Liverpool the match win, was scored by Ashley Barnes who scored his 100th league goal and ended a 46-year wait for Burnley to win at Anfield.

Liverpool’s defeat has put them under immense pressure. They are now six points behind log leaders Manchester United and their title defence is out of their hands. While they will have to start winning matches urgently, they also have to rely on other teams to beat those above them.

Coach Jurgen Klopp refused to blame his misfiring forwards taking full responsibility for the loss.

“The game was impossible to lose, but we did and that’s my fault,” Klopp told Sky Sports.

“It’s my job to make sure the boys have the right attitude, the right amount of confidence to make the right decisions.”

Klopp has only two days to try and sharpen his strikers. On Sunday at 7pm they face Man United in a tough FA Cup encounter.

These two teams will do battle for the second time in the space of seven days at Anfield. Their first meeting was the league match that ended in a draw.
