Five members of a family lost their lives in a car accident on the N1 in Limpopo on Friday night. Two adults and three children, aged between 10 and 13 years old, died when their car lost control and overturned near Ysterburg, Mokopane.
Flippie van Wyk, a family member who was driving in a separate vehicle, witnessed the tragedy and lost both his wife and son in the accident.
“My wife was like a meter and a half away; she was still warm. I could feel the few heartbeats but four seconds, she was gone. I went to my son, who was lying two meters from them on the side. He was still breathing, his stomach was moving, he was still alive, and he died there. I wouldn’t think something like this would happen to me, but it did,” he said.
Limpopo’s Transport MEC Violet Mathye extended her condolences to the grieving family.
“Let me pass our message of condolences to all the five people who perished in the accident that happened on Friday night. We are with them in this heartbreaking time. Please arrive where you are going safe. We know that there will be congestion; already our traffic officers are on the way, even our SAPS are ready to reduce whatever fatalities that could be there,” said Mathye.
The exact cause of the accident remains unknown as investigations continue.
