According to Thoko Didiza, Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, the Legislature has the power to end the Ingonyama Trust.
Minister Didiza was speaking during an interview with Newzroom Afrika on Wednesday.
“Regarding the high-level panel on the dissolution of [the] Ingonyama Trust, it would be a matter for the Legislature and it would be done in consultation with the affected communities,” said Didiza.
The panel, led by former president Kgalema Motlanthe, recommended that the Ingonyama Trust be scrapped.
This has angered traditional leaders in KwaZulu-Natal as they believe that these are ANC attempts to steal their land.
During the funeral of the Traditional Prime Minister to the Zulu Monarch, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, traditional leaders warned President Cyril Ramaphosa to not touch their land under the Ingonyama Trust.
Current Traditional Prime Minister to the Zulu Monarch, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi has accused Didiza of being used by the ANC to take the land away from traditional leaders.
Didiza is said to be unhappy that she was not invited to the meeting of the king with traditional leaders which is happening on Thursday in Ulundi at the Old Legislature.
The meeting will discuss the Ingonyama Trust and allegations that the minister is planning to strip traditional leaders of their powers.
