Owami Visagie, a 17-year-old Grade 11 learner who left her home in Refilwe, Cullinan, in Tshwane on Sunday evening and didn’t return, was found raped and murdered in her cousin’s room on Monday.

Her mother had filed a missing person’s report with the police on Sunday night.

Gauteng education department spokesperson Steve Mabona said the Chipa Tabane Secondary School learner was last seen with her cousin.

“The family went to his house to find out about her whereabouts. Subsequently, they found the learner’s lifeless body in a room inside the cousin’s house and they contacted the police,” he said.

The suspect handed himself over to the police on Monday night.

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane said he was devastated by the gruesome death of the learner.

“We sympathise with her family, extending our condolences to them and the school community at large,” he said.

Gauteng SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masonto said the suspect appeared in the Cullinan Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday to face charges of rape and murder and was remanded in custody.
