KZN Speaker knew about death threats when she refused a secret ballot

  • An MKP member of the KZN Legislature received a death threat in December ordering him to drop the Ntuli vote.
  • Mkhize reported the death threats to KZN Legislature Speaker Nontembeko Boyce before the vote, but says she took no action.

The Speaker of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature was told one of her members had been sent a death threat over the vote to remove Premier Thami Ntuli. She allegedly ignored it.

Musa Mkhize is a member of the MKP in the KZN Legislature. Someone sent him a threatening text message in December from an unregistered MTN number, written in isiZulu. It named four people.

“We hear young men that you are responsible for this vomiting of Voting of no confidence for our removal in power, you will have to wear iron wherever you go, your mothers vomit, it’s Mngadi, Dirks Magubane, you Mkhize, and Moyo your cleverness will end in tears, our kids will not starve because of you, you must know that you have dug your own graves,” the text read, according to a police translation.

Mkhize took the message straight to KZN Legislature Speaker Nontembeko Boyce.

“I reported the matter to Speaker Boyce but she never bothered to look at these threats. It was then clear to me that the lives of MKP members don’t matter to her, only those of the ANC and the GPU members that matter to her,” Mkhize said.

He says he was scared for his life. KwaZulu-Natal has a history of political killings.

At the first of the two no-confidence votes in December, the MKP demanded a secret ballot, citing threats to its members. Boyce refused. Both motions against Ntuli failed.

Hilton police in Pietermaritzburg opened an intimidation case. KwaZulu-Natal Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the investigation is continuing.

“Hilton police have opened a case of intimidation following an incident in which a 49-year-old man was allegedly intimidated by an unknown person on 15 December 2025. The matter is under investigation,” Netshiunda said.
