KZN premier won’t pay King Misuzulu’s legal fees

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube has made it clear that the KZN government won’t pay King Misuzulu kaZwelithini’s legal fees unless his lawyers explain in detail the services they have provided.

During a provincial cabinet media briefing in Durban on Wednesday, Dube-Ncube said the king’s attorneys have filed invoices that were above the generally accepted costs.

She said the state legal adviser addressed correspondence to the attorneys representing His Majesty.

“The adviser expressly stated that the provincial government is unable to consider payment of any invoices for services rendered unless the services are described in detail,” said Dube-Ncube.

The king’s attorneys filed a letter of demand after complaining about the premier’s failure to pay the legal fees.

The attorneys are representing the king in a case challenging his ascension to the throne by Prince Simakade kaZwelithini and his uncle Prince Mbonisi kaBhekuzulu. A lower court held in December that President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to recognise King Misuzulu without first setting up an investigation panel was invalid and unlawful. The case has gone to the Supreme Court of Appeal.
