KZN news bites: ‘Water selling for R200 per Jojo tank in Durban’

Sihle Mavuso presents the latest news from KwaZulu-Natal.

Ntuzuma – As the water crisis in the ANC-run eThekwini municipality worsens, allegations have emerged that the free water being sent to communities is being sold. A Ntuzuma resident, who cannot be named for her safety, said water tanker drivers are telling residents that if they have a Jojo tank on their property, they can deliver water for R200. The resident spoke today during a press briefing by ActionSA in the township. The party announced its findings about the water crisis and said it was taking the eThekwini and Ugu municipalities to court to compel them to provide free water to all.

Ulundi – The National Freedom Party continues to undergo changes after the new leadership under president Ivan Barnes was elected in December. The party has roped in Inkosi Mfanuvele Buthelezi to be one of its councillors in the IFP-controlled Zululand district municipality. Buthelezi is the traditional leader of the Buthelezi clan near the Ithala game reserve in Vryheid. His deployment to the municipality is contained in a letter dated 7 May circulated to all the party’s councillors.

Greytown – A leaked letter from the mayor of Umvoti local municipality in Greytown to the leadership of the ANC in the Inkosi Bhambatha region has revealed how appointments of senior officials in the municipality have been manipulated to deliver a predetermined outcome. Philani “PG” Mavundla, who is also the president of the Abantu Batho Congress, a coalition partner of the ANC in the municipality, claims that Ntombi Ngubane, who is his deputy and also the chairperson of the ANC in the region, has been bringing in ethically compromised officials to preside over interviews for those officials she wants to have appointed.

Dannhauser – The ANC in the Mbuso Kubheka region in Newcastle has been rocked by high-profile resignations just weeks before the 29 May elections. This follows the resignation of five senior members of the Dannhauser sub-region. The leaders in the sub-region cited personal reasons for their decision – however, Scrolla.Africa has learnt that they had a fallout with Mthunzi Mkhumane, the chairperson of the sub-region and a senior councillor in the Dannhauser local municipality. Those who have resigned are Tsoarelo Motloung, Phumelele Mngadi, Bongekile Khumalo, Nomusa Ntuli and Sinenhlanhla Zwane.

Dumbe – The IFP says the situation for the country’s job seekers has become dire in the past few years to the extent that some people spend all their working-age life looking for jobs and then die without getting one. The party’s chairperson in KwaZulu-Natal, Thami Ntuli, made these comments in Dumbe on Thursday while campaigning in the north of the province. He said those elected to lead the country only come to the people when they want to be re-elected and later disappear.
