Richards Bay – The IFP-run City of Umhlathuze has lost its case with the South African Local Government Bargaining Council. The city wanted to stop paying regular overtime rates to workers earning more than R241,110 a year until June 2025. Labour unions Imatu and Samwu rejected this, saying the law clearly states all employees must be paid 1.5 times their normal hourly rate for overtime.
Pietermaritzburg – Dr Gaston Savoi, a businessman from Uruguay, pleaded guilty in the Pietermaritzburg High Court to fraud and corruption charges involving ANC politicians between 2004 and 2007. He was fined R5-million or 10 years in prison. He was also ordered to pay R15-million in legal costs and had R60-million confiscated by the state.
Nongoma – Workers from St Benedictine Hospital, supported by the Health and Other Services Personnel Trade Union of South Africa, protested against bullying and discrimination by their managers. About 100 nurses and general workers joined the picket.
Dundee – The Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) party held a protest at the IFP-led Endumeni local municipality in Dundee. They protested against gender-based violence at the workplace and accused officials of offering jobs in exchange for sexual favours.
Dumbe – The National Freedom Party secretary-general, Teddy Thwala, is taking legal action against the party’s president, Ivan Barnes. Thwala claims Barnes violated a court order that stopped him from suspending any party members until their ongoing case is heard in court.
