KZN news bites: Premier celebrates police success

Pietermaritzburg – Premier Thami Ntuli praised provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s work against crime as his most significant achievement in his first 100 days in office. At a media conference, Ntuli said: “Within the first 100 days of this administration, we launched a crime prevention campaign called Engangeni Ngesango Iyafohla, which focuses on the increasing numbers of undocumented illegal foreign nationals and businesses that employ undocumented foreign nationals.”

uMngeni – Police arrested a 31-year-old suspect for the murder of Councillor Nhlalayenza Ndlovu, who was killed on 5 December 2023. The suspect appeared in court on Monday. 

eShowe – Paramedics fled when community members stoned their ambulance at Obanjeni Game Reserve. Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane condemned the incident. The incident happened when the paramedics were trying to help an injured biker. A fight broke out between the bikers and bystanders. 

Pietermaritzburg – The High Court sentenced police Constable Mthokozisi Gregory Nene, 44, to 25 years in prison for murdering his wife, Nompilo Thobeka Nene, 40, in July 2022. The National Prosecuting Authority praised the successful prosecution and their commitment to fighting gender-based violence.
