Inanda: Police in KwaZulu-Natal, working with officials from the Department of Basic Education, made unannounced visits to Ikusasalethu Secondary School, Newtown Combined School and Inanda Comprehensive School on Tuesday morning. Police say the visits are part of the Safer Schools Protocol, a joint initiative by the Department of Basic Education and SAPS to create safer learning environments in schools. The protocol aims to address social problems such as bullying, gangsterism, substance abuse and gender-based violence. During the visits, police provided valuable safety information to learners, and searches led to the recovery of dagga and cigarettes.
Pietermaritzburg: KZN Traditional Affairs MEC Rev. Thulasizwe Buthelezi has welcomed the KZN COGTA Portfolio Committee’s endorsement of the department’s 2025/26 budget and annual performance plan. This crucial support was granted during a virtual sitting of the committee this morning.
Ntuzuma: The Ntuzuma Regional Court has sentenced Phathesakhe Thuthukani Ngiba, 25, to life and 12 years in prison for the murder and firearm-related charges involving a ward councillor in September 2022 in the KwaMphumulelo area. The deceased, Zakhele Khuzwayo, 44, was a ward councillor at iLembe Municipality. On the evening of 15 September 2022, Khuzwayo was driving his car along a gravel road when he stopped to speak to someone he knew. While they were talking, a car approached them, and an unknown man got out and walked to Khuzwayo’s car. Several shots were fired at Khuzwayo’s car, and the shooter fled. The man who was with Khuzwayo ran to a nearby area for help.
Hlobane: KZN Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane has announced a significant step forward in improving healthcare access in rural communities, with the planned upgrading of Vryheid Hospital into a fully-fledged regional hospital proceeding well. MEC Simelane made the announcement during the Isibhedlela Kubantu outreach programme at Cliffdale Sportsfield in Ward 23, Hlobane, outside Vryheid. The initiative is part of the department’s efforts to address deep-rooted socio-economic disparities and barriers to healthcare, such as poverty, long travel distances and affordability that affect rural communities.
