KZN news bites: Mayor survives IFP’s no-confidence bid in uKhahlamba

Celani Sikhakhane brings you KwaZulu-Natal’s latest news.

Drakensberg – uKhahlamba mayor Vikizitha Mlotshwa has survived another attempt to remove him from office after the IFP’s motion of no confidence was thrown out by the Speaker. On 14 April, IFP councillors filed the motion, accusing Mlotshwa of corruption and saying he is unfit to continue leading the municipality. But Speaker Khumalo dismissed the motion from the council agenda, saying it lacked clear reasons for why the mayor should be removed. This is not the first time the IFP has tried to oust Mlotshwa — several failed motions have been brought against him since 2022.

UMnambithi – Police officers from Operation Vala Umgodi arrested two brothers during a raid at their home in Ezakheni on Thursday, 24 April. The suspects were allegedly involved in taxi-related murders in Embondwane-Waaihoek and nearby areas. Police found an AK-47 with two magazines and 70 rounds of ammunition in the room of the 49-year-old. His 44-year-old brother had an R4 rifle with 35 rounds. The arrests followed intelligence gathered about illegal firearms in the area.

Durban – The Durban Regional Court has sentenced 33-year-old George Vorster to eight years in jail for scamming SARS and his clients out of millions. Vorster, a clearing agent, under-declared customs and VAT payments due to SARS, keeping the difference for himself. He used his company, VRST International South Africa, to commit the fraud. The scam, which took place from February to April 2018, led to tax losses of R2.4 million and forced importers to repay R2.3 million in shortfalls.
