KwaMakhutha: Police in KwaZulu-Natal have launched a manhunt after eleven people were shot dead and three others injured in a mass shooting in the Ziko area of KwaMakhutha, south of Durban, on Tuesday night.
Police say fourteen people, thirteen men and one woman believed to be pregnant, were gathered at a house when three armed men arrived and opened fire before 11pm. Ten victims, including the woman, died at the scene; four others were taken to hospital, where one later died of gunshot injuries. The attackers also set fire to a car belonging to one of the victims.
“Preliminary investigations have revealed that some of the victims were on Crime Intelligence’s radar in connection with illegal activities, which police cannot divulge at the moment to protect investigations which have been launched,” police said. The motive for the attack has not been confirmed. KwaMakhutha SAPS and the eThekwini District Tracing Team are investigating, and KZN Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli is expected to visit the scene and meet with law enforcement, community representatives and affected families.

Park Rynie: MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma has expressed condolences after the death of a Road Traffic Inspectorate officer from Park Rynie, on the KZN South Coast.
“We have assigned a team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate to work with a highly specialised team from the South African Police Service as part of an investigation into circumstances surrounding the death of our hero, a hard worker and a patriotic RTI officer from Park Rynie, Timothy Simpson,” Duma said. Simpson died after the state-owned vehicle he was travelling in caught fire while he was on duty along the N2 freeway in Park Rynie on Tuesday night, engulfed in flames at around 8pm. He was reportedly alone in the vehicle and unable to escape. A specialised team is examining forensic and mechanical evidence to determine what caused the fire.
