Sihle Mavuso presents the latest news from KwaZulu-Natal.
Hluhluwe – A resident of Hluhluwe in northern KwaZulu-Natal died after he was shot on Sunday during a community hunt for a buffalo that had escaped from the Ezemvelo-owned Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park. Ezemvelo said the buffalo escaped from the reserve but because the weather was bad, their helicopter could not take off to herd it back to the reserve as is usually done with stray wild game. The community living near the park’s Mashiya gate then went hunting for the buffalo. During the hunt, gunshots were fired and the man was killed. Ezemvelo said there is an ongoing investigation to find out what exactly led to the man’s death.
Umlazi – A parent from Umlazi wants the KwaZulu-Natal education department to act against a teacher who hit a learner and badly injured his hand. The incident happened at Mgaga High School in Umlazi in the south of Durban and the learner had to undergo medical treatment. The learner’s father pressed criminal charges against the teacher at the Bhekithemba police station, but the teacher is yet to be arrested for assault. The parent alleged that when he reported the matter to the local school inspector, he laughed at him and said he must write and tell him how they want him to tackle the matter.
Durban – Inkosi Zuzifa Buthelezi, the son of the late Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, who succeeded his father as the traditional leader of the Buthelezi clan in Mahlabathini near Ulundi, is heading to the National Assembly in Cape Town. Inkosi Zuzifa is comfortably sitting at number seven on the list of IFP candidates destined for parliament after the 29 May elections. The list was officially released by the IEC today to allow members of the public to lodge objections. The IFP was founded by Prince Buthelezi and he led it for 44 years before handing over the reins to Velenkosini Hlabisa in 2019.
Eshowe – The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has welcomed the judgment of the Electoral Court that ruled that the registration of the Eshowe-based uMkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party is lawful. In a statement after the ruling, the IEC said the judgment provides the necessary clarity and certainty to enable the finalisation of candidate nomination processes. Additionally, it said the ruling confirms that the decision to register the party was taken regularly and in terms of the law. MK is backed by former president Jacob Zuma and it was registered by Jabulani Khumalo in September last year at an address in Eshowe.
Durban – Another top radio presenter is reportedly leaving Durban-based commercial radio station Gagasi FM. Khaya Dladla of Uzalo fame is said to have already notified the station of his decision. Dladla’s exit comes on the heels of the resignation of Penny Ntuli, who announced her departure on social media yesterday. Ntuli revealed that the radio station was offering her a salary of R2,800 a month and the revelations have left the station red-faced and battling bad publicity and trolls on social media.
