KZN news bites: King Misuzulu tells family he cannot resign from the throne

Celani Sikhakhane brings you KwaZulu-Natal’s latest news.

Pongola: King Misuzulu kaZwelithini told his family that despite the Supreme Court of Appeal ruling in his favour, he did not ask for the throne. Instead he was born into it and he could not resign. He was briefing the members of the Zulu Royal family on Thursday afternoon at eMashobeni Royal Palace in Pongola about the court ruling that was delivered on 6 October over the battle of the throne. He urged the royal family to resist temptations of divisions and embrace unity and harmony. “I did not ask to be on this throne; I was born into it. It is not a position from which one can resign – it is a sacred responsibility I must bear with your support as the elders of this family. Among us are those with political ambitions who protect their political interests rather than their royal blood. We know them and we see them. I call upon you to filter the noise and focus your energy on restoring harmony and rebuilding unity,” he said.

Durban: The City of eThekwini is building a new shelter for the homeless which is still under construction. The Sakhithemba Homeless Shelter is being built at Illovo Township in the south of Durban. According to the Deputy Mayor of eThekwini, Zandile Myeni, the shelter will offer safe accommodation, skills development, job opportunities and access to social services, including professional social workers, a library and learnership programmes for the homeless. The Deputy Mayor assured residents that the shelter’s proximity to a school will not compromise safety and that robust procedures are in place to protect all stakeholders.

Empangeni: The Department of Transport in KwaZulu-Natal has invested close to R1-billion to rehabilitate an important corridor in Empangeni which connects KZN Province and Mpumalanga Province. The department says the corridor is crucial for the growth of the economy of the country. They further said that as part of the Transport Month, more than R13-billion has been invested to strengthen the province’s public transport system. “We want the department to be the catalyst for the growth of all sectors of the economy,” the department explained.
