KZN News Bites: Instant karma as taxi hits thief

Sihle Mavuso presents the latest news from KwaZulu-Natal.

Verulam – A robbery suspect was injured when he was knocked down by a taxi while fleeing the scene of a robbery in Verulam, north of Durban. He and a friend had robbed a victim. The taxi did not stop. According to Reaction Unit South Africa, the incident happened around 6.54 am along Wick Street. The suspected robber was treated at the scene and was later transported to hospital.

Umzinto – The Umdoni driver’s testing centre in Umzinto has been downgraded and can now only offer licence renewals. The provincial transport department decided, following an investigation into corruption at the centre, that it could no longer issue driver’s licences. Lulu Memela, chairperson of the Association of Owners of Driving Schools in Umzinto, said the downgrading of the centre will badly affect their business.

Durban – The Gap Fixers of South Africa political party and its secretary general Sbu Mpisane are holding their breath after joining the Labour Party in a court case where they have applied to have the 29 May elections postponed. That is after the Gap Fixers and many other parties were unable to make it onto the ballot due to technical glitches with the systems of the Electoral Commission of South Africa. Mpisane said talks about who to back should they fail in court will be discussed at a later stage.

Greytown – The underfire mayor of Umvoti local municipality in Greytown is disputing claims that he should be removed because the municipality is facing a financial crisis. Philani “PG” Mavundla of the Abantu Batho Congress wrote to councillors Vincent Zondi and Bhekisisa Gwala and said they should furnish him with evidence to prove their claims. The two councillors initiated a council motion to have Mavundla ousted through a vote of no confidence and claimed that the municipality’s finances were in bad shape because of his mismanagement.

Pietermaritzburg – Comrades Marathon runners have been warned of the danger posed by the ongoing construction work between Sherwood and the Westwood Mall near Durban. This is because the route, which is typically four lanes wide as it crosses the bridge, will be narrowed to two lanes and bordered by concrete barricades. To help make it safer, the organisers of the marathon that takes place on Sunday 9 June said they will be using additional lighting to ensure that any hazards are well-lit and easily seen by participants.
