Ulundi: The head of the IFP Youth Brigade in KwaZulu-Natal is in hot water after he was caught on a leaked recording allegedly telling members to beat up fellow members at a branch meeting. The aim was to help Premier Thami Ntuli’s supporters take control and push out party President Velenkosini Hlabisa. The recording involves Mncedisi Maphisa and a member from an Ulundi branch led by BR Buthelezi. IFP Spokesperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa said the party is now investigating. “In line with the principle of audi alteram partem, Cde Maphisa has been formally requested to provide a full explanation to the Party by close of business today, Tuesday, 05 May 2026,” said Hlengwa. Maphisa told the woman that he has used these kinds of tactics before and that it is how he has survived in party politics.
Pietermaritzburg: KZN Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma is facing angry contractors who say his department has not been paying them on time. On Tuesday, Duma said his department met with the contractors and that the meeting went well. The contractors build and maintain more than 34 000 kilometres of roads across the province. “Despite challenges around delayed payments, we appreciate their solid inputs and suggestions as we work collectively to create a prosperous KwaZulu-Natal. By and large, their inputs are an addition to the collective voices, including those of leaders of political parties in the legislature who have openly expressed their support of the department as we usher in a new era,” said Duma.
Durban: The Democratic Alliance (DA) has backed a statement from Provincial Treasury that lays bare the depth of the financial crisis at the KZN Department of Transport. DA representative Riona Gokool said the Treasury statement, made by Finance MEC Francois Rodgers, confirms what the DA has been saying all along, that the department’s money problems are not caused by a “system glitch.” She said the real problem is poor financial management and bad budgeting.
