KZN News Bites: eThekwini to spend R25M on luxury carsĀ

Sihle Mavuso presents the latest news from KwaZulu-Natal.

Ethekwini ā€“ The ANC-run eThekwini municipality is set to spend R25-million to buy luxury cars for the mayor, deputy mayor, speaker and other high-ranking ANC politicians. This is contained in a finance committee report presented last Wednesday, which said the politicians, among them controversial Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda, need increased security ahead of the 29 May elections. The municipality admits that it does not have the money to buy the cars but that they will be bought through ā€œsavingsā€ in the 2023-2024 financial year ending in July.

KwaMashu ā€“ Calls are mounting against the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health led by MEC Nomagugu Simelane-Mngadi to act against the medical staff of the KwaMashu Health Centre in Durban. This was after a patient died earlier today when the staff allegedly ignored him and other patients in a queue. The health centre is known for its long queues and turnaround times.

Newcastle ā€“ The National Freedom Party (NFP) has intervened to save Musa Shukela Thwala of Team Sugar South Africa from being removed as a member of the executive committee of Newcastle municipality. This was after the party told its sole councillor to withdraw his signature on the motion that seeks to remove Thwala after his fallout with the IFP. The NFP told its councillor that he had no authority to sign the letter and he must cease working with the IFP in the municipality.

Durban ā€“ Pro-MK Party religious groupings in eThekwini that were previously aligned with the All African Alliance Movement (AAAM) have severed ties with it. The religious leaders say that following the recent disagreement between former president Jacob Zuma and the AAAM, they will now report directly to the MK structures in the city. The AAAM supported MK until a recent fallout.
