KZN news bites: Community kills man accused of murdering mom

Sihle Mavuso presents the latest news from KwaZulu-Natal.

Mfolozi – Umfolozi municipality authorities have warned residents not to take the law into their own hands. This comes after an incident on Sunday when the community of Ntuzuma village attacked and necklaced 29-year-old Sipho Gabela in full view of the public. Gabela was accused of killing his mother, Sakhephi Gabela, on the same day. The mayor of Umfolozi, Xolani Bhenu, says people must allow the police to play their role instead of acting unlawfully.

Verulam – A 28-year-old technician from Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape, who was in Verulam for training and went missing on Sunday, has been found dead. Luzuko Xalakhe’s body was found dumped in a drain in the notorious township of Inanda, north of Durban. According to private security company Reaction Unit South Africa, his injuries suggest that he was first tortured and later murdered.

Port Shepstone – The ANC-run Ugu district municipality notes with “grave concern” the financial challenges faced by the South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise, resulting in staff getting only half of their salaries in May and June. Like all other municipal entities, the municipality says that South Coast Tourism is allocated grant funding from both the parent municipality and the family of municipalities in the district.

Muden – Three men in a car with three other people were shot dead in Muden in the KZN Midlands in the early hours of Thursday morning. Police said a woman was injured and rushed to hospital while two others were unharmed. The car they were in was reported stolen in Johannesburg, police said.
