uMkhanyakude: The ANC Youth League’s Nokuhamba Nyawo Region, under uMkhanyakude District in far northern KZN, has accused some ANC leaders of treating the organisation as private property, manipulating the candidate selection process to serve their own hunger for power.
The ANCYL raised its anger this week as the ANC finalised its list of candidates ahead of the 4 November local government elections. The Young Lions say young people were sidelined in the selection process, left off candidate lists entirely, despite being expected to fill rallies, knock on doors and keep the party alive on the ground.
In a statement following the selection process, the ANCYL said it would no longer stay silent while the ANC is treated as someone’s personal property. “The ANC is not a family inheritance. It is not a friend and comrade employment agency. It is not a personal ladder to municipal positions. We therefore demand complete transparency regarding the constitution of the RIVP, declaration of conflict of interest, interviews, scoring, ordering and alteration of the PR list, as well as the ANC’s own requirements on youth,” the statement read.
Durban: Crime Prevention officers in Greenwood Park, north of Durban, have arrested a 45-year-old man after finding firearms, ammunition, drugs and cash at his home in Effingham on Thursday.
Police were conducting routine crime prevention duties when they received information about a person selling drugs at the address. A search of the property turned up a rifle, a shotgun and three handguns, along with 3,196 rounds of ammunition of various calibres, including 1,100 rounds for an AK-47. The suspect was also found with mandrax tablets, cocaine, and over R200,000 in cash. He was arrested and charged with illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, and possession of and dealing in drugs. He is expected to appear in court soon.
uMngeni: DA mayoral candidate for uMngeni Local Municipality, Chris Pappas, is set to unpack the party’s Next Chapter manifesto for residents on Saturday.
Pappas, seeking a second term as mayor, will be joined by DA National Campaign Manager Ashor Sarupen, Deputy Provincial Leader Martin Meyer, constituency heads Mmabatho Tembe and Edwin Bath, along with councillors and candidates, to outline the party’s plans for the municipality over the next five years. The DA says uMngeni has seen significant growth and development under its leadership. uMngeni remains the only municipality governed by the DA in KwaZulu-Natal since the 2021 local government elections.
