La Lucia: AmaBhinca are making history at this year’s Durban July by setting up their own elite tent to watch horse racing while showing off traditional fashion and Zulu culture. Phindile Zulu of Halisi Afrique in La Lucia revealed the plan on Wednesday, saying big Maskandi stars like Igcokama Elisha (real name Mthandeni Manqele) have confirmed they’ll attend. The Hollywood Bet Durban July was first run in 1897 over 1600m for 500 sovereigns and was called The Durban Turf Club Handicap. It was later renamed the Rothmans Durban July Handicap and used to run on the first Saturday in July.
Pietermaritzburg: Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane has promised to advertise 20 medical jobs within seven days to help unemployed doctors. She made the announcement on Wednesday during ongoing protests by jobless doctors in Pietermaritzburg. Speaking with Premier Thami Ntuli, Simelane said this follows talks between the Health Department and Premier’s office to find solutions despite money problems. She added that the 800 posts mentioned by the Finance Minister earlier this year are for the whole country, with KZN getting its share.
Cornubia: The Durban High Court has sentenced Siphamandla Makhanya, 39, and Mxolisi Percy Hadebe, 40, to life in prison for murder. They killed ANC member Siduduzo Innocent Magwaza, 45, on 12 January 2021 in Cornubia. Magwaza was nominated to become ANC chairperson for Ward 102. Magwaza and Hadebe knew each other and worked together on a project committee dealing with tenders in the area.
