A 23-year-old woman was shot dead in an apparent armed robbery while reportedly on her way to work in Thembisa on Monday morning.
The woman was found dead in Mapungubwe Street at about 5.45am.
Police said her belongings were taken during the incident.
The woman has been identified, but police said her family had not yet been formally informed.
No arrests have been made and police are following up on leads.
Her death comes as police investigate a series of cases involving women whose bodies have been found across Ekurhuleni.
However, police said there was no evidence at this stage linking Monday’s shooting to those cases.
“Preliminary investigations have not established any link between this incident and the recent cases involving the bodies of women found in Ekurhuleni,” police said.
The latest killing comes amid growing concern over violence in the area. Police have been investigating the deaths of women found across Ekurhuleni in recent months.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has also spoken out about violent crime following recent mass shootings around the country.
Speaking in Ekurhuleni on Sunday, Ramaphosa said security forces had been instructed to step up efforts to bring violent crime under control.
“This is the level of criminality that we must bring down, and our security forces are now going to continue pulling out all stops.
“It cannot go on like this, and the clear instruction to our security forces is that we must bring the levels of criminality and violence down.”
Ramaphosa said South Africans should not have to live in fear of people with guns.
“We cannot be a country where people just pick up guns and start shooting at people at random, making the people of South Africa unsafe.
“This has to be brought to an end, and we will be taking the necessary actions to address this,” Ramaphosa said.
Police investigations into the Thembisa shooting continue.
