Two women are facing charges after faking kidnappings in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
In the KwaZulu-Natal case, a 26-year-old woman reported that three men had snatched her three-month-old baby in the KwaMagwaza area of Melmoth on Friday. Police quickly launched a massive search involving multiple units.
After hours of combing the area, police discovered the truth: there was no baby. Investigators found the woman had lied to her boyfriend and his family that she was pregnant and had given birth. To cover her story, she invented the kidnapping.
Meanwhile in Gauteng, a 30-year-old woman was arrested in Norkem Park near Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni after she falsely reported that her boyfriend had been kidnapped during a house robbery on 12 September. Police later uncovered that she was part of a plot to rob him.
Investigators said she and four male accomplices conspired to abduct the man and empty his bank account. Police arrested a 28-year-old man for house robbery and kidnapping, while the woman faces charges of perjury and conspiracy to kidnap.
Both suspects appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 15 September.
Police urged the public to stop making false reports, warning that perjury is a serious crime that carries heavy penalties.
