Siphiwe “General GTZ” Sibisi, the last living member of the famous Kwaito group Chiskop, has died after a long battle with stomach cancer.

His family shared the news in a statement.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Siphiwe ‘General GTZ’ Sibisi, who passed away after being hospitalised for major surgery,” the family said in a statement.

The much-loved singer, who had health problems after a failed operation in 2022, died on 29 September after undergoing another major operation.

Siphiwe faced ongoing health issues following the failed surgery in 2022. While his condition improved briefly, it worsened in the past few days.

His family thanked everyone who supported him during his music career, adding that his impact on Kwaito music will live on.

Chiskop secured their first record deal eight years after forming as a group. The band included well-known figures like Mandoza and produced popular songs in the 1990s, such as “Klaimer”, “Abasazi”, and “Abantwana.”

Despite their success as Kwaito pioneers, Mandoza eventually left to pursue a solo career.

Siphiwe’s death follows that of fellow Kwaito star Mapaputi. Other Chiskop members, SB Bless and Lolipop, both died in 2003, just before the release of their last album, and Mandoza passed away in 2016.
