A police officer has been given his marching orders after he was accused of impregnating an inmate who was sentenced to 30 years behind bars for double murder.
It’s reported that the police officer from North West had sex with the murderer at the Stilfontein police station holding cells in October 2020.
Police spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh said in a statement that the woman had been brought in from the Rooigrond Correctional Centre to the Stilfontein holding cells ahead of her court appearance.
“In March 2021 she discovered that she was pregnant and correctional services reported the incident to SAPS,” said Myburgh.
Department of Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo previously said that the police officer in question used to transport the inmate to court.
The police officer was dismissed on 31 August during a departmental trial in terms of the South African Police Service Discipline Regulations 2016.
North West police commissioner Lieutenant-General Sello Kwena approved the findings of the investigations on Tuesday.
Kwena said this sort of unethical behaviour cannot be accepted within the organisation.
Data from the Independent Police Investigative Directorate states that since 2012, police officers nationwide have been accused of nearly 1,000 rapes. Over 30% of these officers were on duty at the time of the alleged crime.
May 2021 also saw several cases of sex between prison officials and inmates with one incident being charged as rape.
