Teachers at Vuselela Primary School in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, were robbed by nine men at gunpoint on Monday morning.
A traumatised teacher, who spoke to Scrolla.Africa anonymously said: “We were in the staff room getting ready to go to the assembly while the school principal was with the learners. The robbers entered and pointed guns at us.”
She said they took cellphones, bank cards, car keys and cash.
“While searching us and talking about our belongings, they said if we tried to do anything, they would shoot us. We obeyed and did what they wanted. They took their time and ensured they took all our valuables,” said the teacher.
Another teacher said the learners were traumatised by the incident.
“While some men were robbing us inside, the other one went to the principal. Our learners ran away after seeing the man’s gun.”
The learners were sent home before classes started.
A parent who did not want to be named said schools need tighter security.
“I asked about security and was told there was no money to hire private security. The school doesn’t have money because our kids don’t pay school fees. Maybe the school would use that money if they did.”
Western Cape Department of Education spokesperson Unathi Booi said counselling support has been provided for the learners and teachers.
SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said Khayelitsha police are investigating the robbery.
