Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says it is ‘almost impossible’ for his side to finish in a top four spot in the English Premier League this season.
The team from Merseyside claimed a 1-0 victory over struggling Wolves on Monday night in what gave the side a much needed three points in what was only their second win in their last five league encounters. The win moved them to within five points of London club Chelsea, but the German manager admits it will be a tough task for his side to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Speaking to German newspaper Bild, Klopp said: “I like to be an optimist, but in the league, it is almost impossible to qualify in the competition for the Champions League places that we have. At Tottenham, Gareth Bale is now playing again, and they are also in the running. Plus [Manchester] City and United, who are far away.”
He continued saying: “Chelsea is on the rise. Reaching Champions League qualification through the league will be difficult, we know that.”
Despite admitting defeat in the Champions League race this season, the German manager is not fearful that he may lose his job, claiming that everyone involved with the club has come to terms with the difficult season they have had, and everybody believes in each other and that they can turn their bad fortunes around.
Liverpool defeated German side RB Leipzig in their Champions League round of 16 encounter and will find out who their quarter-final opponents are on 19 March when the draw for the competition takes place.
Liverpool could qualify for next season’s Champions League campaign by winning the current season’s trophy which will be a tough ask for the Reds.
