Rafael Nadal, a legend at Roland Garros, lost in the first round of the French Open against Alexander Zverev on Monday.

The match ended with Zverev triumphing 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-3, making it the first time Nadal has lost in the opening round at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris.

Nadal, closing in on his 38th birthday, returned to the court after a 15-month absence due to hip surgery in 2023.

After the match, Nadal, nicknamed the King of Clay, said he was uncertain about the future: “It’s incredible, the amount of energy, it’s difficult for me to talk.

“I don’t know if it’s gonna be the last time I’m going to be here in front of all of you. Honestly, I’m not 100% sure, but if it’s the last time, I enjoyed it.”

Nadal’s performance showed flashes of his former brilliance, especially during a spirited second-set fightback.

However, Zverev proved too much for the Spaniard.

The importance of the moment was shown by the attendance of top players like Novak Djokovic, Iga Swiatek, and Carlos Alcaraz in the stands.

Nadal remained on the court to address the crowd: “Probably it’s a big percentage that I’ll not be back playing here in Roland Garros but I can’t say 100%. I enjoyed a lot being here, I am travelling with the family and I am having fun.

“The body is feeling a little bit better now than two months ago.”

He also hinted at a possible return for the Olympics: “I hope to be back on this court for the Olympics, it’s something that motivates me. That will be another chance and I really hope to be well prepared.”
