  • Residents say the man robbed, killed and ordered his crew to attack them daily, forcing many to stay indoors out of fear.
  • Police killed him during a patrol after he mistook officers for residents and opened fire. IPID is investigating the shooting.

For the first time in years, residents of Xakabantu informal settlement in Vrygrond say they can walk freely without fear.

They are celebrating the death of a criminal who had terrorised the community, robbing and attacking people daily. Some residents had even abandoned their homes.

One woman said: “We will finally go out and enjoy the sunlight without fear. We were always indoors. He made our lives a living hell.”

The man carried two guns and commanded a group of criminals. “He was the one giving them instructions. He would kick down doors, damage shacks and take whatever he wanted,” said another resident.

He was killed by police officers last week. Residents said he tried to rob them during a night patrol, thinking they were ordinary people. When he realised they were police, he opened fire and was shot dead.

Another woman admitted she once lost faith in the police. “I always insulted SAPS for failing us. But after killing this person, I love them and won’t insult them again.”

Locals said they can now visit friends and partners freely. “He was not only stealing our belongings but also our happiness. He robbed couples and mocked them,” said a resident.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) confirmed the incident and said the matter is under investigation.
